About A Just Harvest

A Just Harvest logo
The mission of A Just Harvest is to fight poverty and hunger in the Rogers Park and greater Chicago community by providing nutritious meals daily while cultivating community and economic development and organizing across racial, cultural and socio-economic lines in order to create a more just society.

A Just Harvest intentionally utilizes three comprehensive strategies to combat hunger and poverty: 1) direct service, 2) community organizing and 3)community and economic development.

Direct service: The Community Kitchen feeds an average of 170 patrons per night; hosts a Producemobile, serving 250 families per month; offers healthy eating and healthy cooking workshops quarterly; distributes food items at least four times a week to an average of 180 households; receives and distributes over 40 tons of fruit and vegetables from the Farmers Markets from May – Oct; ensures an average of 60 children will receive healthy snacks through the Children’s Anti-Hunger Collaborative program; engages over 5000 volunteers in addressing hunger continues with (2) partner congregations in establishing free meals programs one day a week.

Community Organizing: over 30 partnering organizations will be engaged in anti-hunger work; organizing continues through Northside P.O.W.E.R. in areas of demanding a just society, mass incarceration/violence prevention, protecting and resourcing our local public school and food justice.

Community and Economic Development: Through the Genesis Project we continue to expand the Above Ground Urban Agriculture program “AGUA”, including in-day Next Generation Science garden renovation of Anthony’s Garden at Gale in collaboration with community leaders; install and manage composting systems serving as an accessible community model, reducing waste from the Community Kitchen; will pilot a cultural exchange and celebration program in collaboration with Howard Area Community Center ESL and basic skills instructors through the AGUA and Community-Based Learning programs; two new business start-ups will be mentored through the Just BITES program; and pilot the Just CIRCLES program (Caring for and Investing in Returning Citizens Looking or Embody Success) that will include recovering opportunities, job raining and peach circles and restorative practices in order to reduce recidivism; and pilot a holistic healing peace circle for women WE LOVE (Women Experiencing LOVE).

Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities at A Just Harvest

There are numerous opportunities for volunteers at A Just Harvest. Donating food and serving dinners at the Community Kitchen is a great help. We also need volunteers in the area of urban agriculture/gardening, assisting in the greenhouse, mulching, Hoop House, urban gardening plots, as well as mentoring and board or committee members. On June 24, 2017 we need runners/walkers to join our 2nd Annual Sanctuary 5K. We are always proactive in looking for ways to best use the talents of our many partners. No idea is turned away. We welcome your time and gifts.
