The mission of North Shore Senior Center is to foster the independence and well-being of older adults, enhance their dignity and self respect, and promote their participation in and contribution toward all aspects of community life.
We seek volunteers to help with various programs, including Social Services, House of Welcome, Lifelong Learning, Escorted Transportation, Development and Marketing.

Life Stories is an oral history program where individuals can tell their personal history or stories to a trained interviewer in person or via Zoom. Volunteers needed to interview folks wanting this service must be good communicators and comfortable dealing with the public. You would meet w/the individual for two, 1 hour sessions. Editors need to have the technology skills to edit the files, transfer to discs or other mediums and make them ready to be distributed to the client and his family. Training provided.
Do you have a curious mind? Are you able to access various websites in your search for information, product, location and more? If yes, you might enjoy researching funding sources for the North Shore Senior Center. You can work from the comfort of your own home while doing background work on charities, foundations and corporations that may be able to support NSSC programs and services. In this role, you can make your own schedule and you will report to the Grants Manager. Grant writing skills a plus.
Fitness Center volunteer needed to assist clients at the North Shore Senior Center Fitness Center. Answer phone inquiries, provide info to members/guests about services and costs and assist trainers as needed.
Because of the COVID outbreak, we will be open on a limited basis.
If you enjoy educational seminars dealing with a variety of topics such as politics, travel, health, movies, popular culture and more then consider becoming a program aide. Volunteers are needed to help sign-in individuals who have registered for our North Shore Senior presentations. Once sign-in is complete, volunteers are welcome to attend the program at no charge.
Make a difference in the lives of persons with memory loss by interacting in the home-like setting of the House of Welcome Adult Day Service Program. (HOW). The HOW program serves older adults living with memory loss and provides a structured group program of therapeutic activities. You can assist with scheduled activities such as crafts, baking, games or spend time 1-1 with participants. No previous experience or skills required.
However, IF you have a pet therapy animal you can participate in that aspect. IF you play a musical instrument you can participate in the music therapy portion.

Need friendly, outgoing individual to work the Social Services/Administration Reception Desk. Greet customers, answer questions, take calls, direct inquiries to staff, assist clients with completing paperwork and more. Warm, inviting work environment and opportunity to be part of the team. Computer skills are not needed for this position; but they are an asset.

Extroverts wanted! The Lifelong Learning Department is looking for a volunteer to greet clients, answer questions about Lifelong Learning programs and services, provide information about the dept. offerings and Center membership, and man the front desk. On occasion, you might be asked to sign folks in for presentations and other duties. Good computer skills are required since all program info is housed in the computer system.

Make phone calls to a senior in his/her home a few times each month. Engage in conversation and activities such as games, projects, etc. Make someone’s day, make a friend!
Volunteers are needed at the Northfield and Evanston locations to assist seniors apply for entitlement programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, SNAP, Low Income Home Energy Assistance Programs and other programs. Volunteers are needed to assist social workers by helping interviewing clients, completing applications and making follow-up phone calls. You should be comfortable using a computer, demonstrate attention to detail, and have good verbal and written communication skills. We ask for a time commitment of approximately ½ day per week.
