About The Douglas Center

The Douglas Center logo

We are a community day services program for adults with developmental and/or intellectual disabilities. We teach daily living skills, social skills, community skills and work skills. We also offer therapies with licensed therapists such as art, dance and pet therapy. Our purpose is to teach the clients to be as independent as they can be.

Volunteers are needed to help in numerous ways ranging from leading activities for the clients (job skills, reading, social skills) to assisting staff with arts, crafts to exercise and music.

Reading Assistance Volunteers

Posted on

If you are in school to become a teacher or just enjoy helping people improve their reading skills, this is for you! Many participants at The Douglas Center are at lower reading levels and would like to improve their reading ability or just practice reading.

You will work under the guidance and supervision of a trained staff member. This volunteer service can be done during the hours of 9:00 am and 2:00 pm, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday and requires a minimum 60 hour commitment. If you are a college student or need service hours, you can choose to do a short-term volunteer commitment. If you are looking for a rewarding volunteer opportunity, please contact Elizabeth C. Kristiansen via email: ekristiansen@thedouglascenter.org or phone: 847-674-1921.
