About SitStayRead
Our mission is to advance children's literacy and builds confidence in young readers by using an engaging curriculum incorporating on social-emotional learning enriched by certified reading assistance dogs. Early literacy skills are essential in helping children transition from learning to read to reading to learn and eliminating the literacy gap. Yet, many children in Chicago don’t receive the time and skills to build a foundation for reading to close the gap. Our vision is to create a world where every child, regardless of race or economic status, has access to the resources and opportunities they need to develop strong literacy skills, build meaningful connections with animals, and thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. SitStayRead provides year-round programming for K-1st students in the city of Chicago. We serve schools in neighborhoods where the student population is at least 75% low-income and 60% of third graders score below the national reading average. Developed in partnership with local educators and faculty from the University of Illinois at Chicago Center for Literacy, the University of Chicago, DePaul University, and Northeastern University, our bilingual (English and Spanish) curriculum helps students learn to read in a fun, engaging way.
